Best Hanfu Brands: What We Actually Recommend

There are two tiers of "brands": English-language shops designed for you, and Chinese studios that sell through Taobao. Both can deliver quality. These are the ones we actually recommend after testing.

The payoff

This is what good brands deliver.

Finished sets, accurate cuts, real fabric — the difference between a costume and a wardrobe piece.

International Brands (English Checkout)

Hanfu Story (hanfustory.net)

Price: $60–$300 · Best for: first-time buyers.
The best-known international seller. Consistent quality, accurate photos, size charts in cm, shipping to US/EU/AU in ~2 weeks. Fabric quality is genuinely good for the price; historical accuracy is "inspired" rather than museum-grade but always tasteful.

NewMoonDance (Etsy)

Price: $40–$200 · Best for: budget and cosplay.
Reliable Etsy Hanfu store. Sets are full, colors are vivid, and their photos match the product. Not historically rigorous, but a popular and fair-value entry.

Nuwa Hanfu

Price: $300–$2,000+ · Best for: premium custom wedding silk, historical accuracy.
High-end studio making genuinely good silk ensembles with traditional cutting, including bridal pieces. Long production (4–8 weeks custom). For the splurge.

Top Chinese Studios (via Taobao / agent)

Shisanyu (十三閟)

Price: $80–$400 · Best for: bold, stylish Tang and Song designs with huge color options. The Hanfu industry's famous studio with ages of literary collections. Modern silhouettes, excellent colors. Requires a Taobao agent for international delivery.

Huajianji (花间记)

Price: $50–$200 · Best for: high-quality mid-range Tang ruqun and cotton silk blends. Great fabric for the money, accurate details, comfortable all-day wear. A crowd favorite.

Chinese Historical Costume Studios (汉赋 / 明制)

China's Ming-style studios have exploded: Search 明制 in Taobao to reach dozens of studios making accurate Ming aoqun and mamianqun skirts. For historical-accuracy fans, this is where to look for $100–$300 research-grade Ming wear.

How to Vet Any Hanfu Brand

  • Look for the studio name (店铺) — a real brand shows it; resellers hide it.
  • Ask about fabric composition — reputable sellers disclose silk %, and describe the weave (sha deart n., ling, jin).
  • Check reviews with photos — color accuracy differs between screens and fabric.
  • Price sanity: real silk-Silk set below $60 is almost never real silk.
